Q: How is the official rate set?

The Bank of Russia sets the rates of foreign currencies against the ruble every working day. It determines the dollar, euro and yuan rates from foreign exchange market data, and the rates of other currencies through cross rates. A rate takes effect from the next calendar day.

Q: Which rate applies on weekends and holidays?

The last one set. The rate set on Friday applies on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, until the next rate. The calculator picks it automatically if you choose a day off.

Q: Why can I already see tomorrow’s rate today?

The Bank of Russia sets the rate in the afternoon, and it takes effect the next day. Until tomorrow’s rate is set, the page shows only today’s.

Q: Which rate applies to a contract priced in conventional units?

If the contract price is in a foreign currency or conventional units and payment is made in rubles, the amount is calculated at the official rate on the day of payment, unless the contract or the law sets a different rate or date (Article 317(2) of the Russian Civil Code). Contracts often add a markup, such as “Bank of Russia rate plus 2%”; the calculator takes it into account.

Q: Why is the official rate needed in accounting?

In accounting, amounts in foreign currency are converted into rubles at the official rate on the transaction date (Accounting Regulation PBU 3/2006). The same rate is used for the VAT base when it is expressed in a foreign currency (Article 153 of the Russian Tax Code).

Q: Where does the data on this page come from?

From the Bank of Russia website. The page checks for new rates every hour; the calculator requests the rate for a past date from the Bank of Russia when you choose it.
