There are two tasks and the formulas are different. Charge VAT Add tax to the price without tax. Allocate VAT Find out how much tax is already sitting inside the amount. An error occurs when 22% is deducted from the tax amount: the tax is considered from the price without tax, not from the total.

Formulas

Accrue from above: VAT = tax-free amount × rate / 100

Allocate from the amount: VAT = amount with tax × rate / (100 + rate).

Bet. Accrue on an amount without VAT Allocate from the VAT amount
22% × 22/100 × 22 / 122
10% x 10/100 × 10/110
7% × 7/100 × 7/107
5% x 5/100 × 5/105

Examples

We charge 22 percent. The price without tax is 50 000 rubles. VAT = 50 000 × 22 / 100 = 11 000 rubles. The result is 61 000 rubles.

Allocating 22 percent. The buyer paid 61,000 rubles with tax. VAT = 61 000 × 22 / 122 = 11 000 rubles. The amount without tax is 50 000 rubles.

It's not a good shortcut. If you take away 22 % from 61 000 rubles, you will get 47 580 rubles. and 13 420 rubles. tax - 2 420 rubles more than actually.

Quick check: The tax-free amount multiplied by 1.22 should give the tax-free amount.

The two of them are the same as each other.

What rates are in effect

  • 22% - basic rate. It is used when there is no reason for another.
  • 10% - preferential: goods from the lists of the Tax Code, for example, part of food and children's goods, medicines.
  • 0 percent Exports and related services. This is not an exemption: the tax is charged at a zero rate, deductions are retained.
  • 5 and 7 percent For companies and entrepreneurs on a simplified system that are required to pay VAT and have chosen a reduced rate. They do not accept entry tax deduction.

A separate case is “VAT-free”: the seller is exempt from tax or is not a payer. In the documents and write, there are no lines with tax.

Where does the extra penny come from?

The tax is rounded to a penny. If there are several lines in the document and VAT is calculated for each, the amount of rounded values may differ from the tax calculated from the total by one or two cents. There is no mistake here: in the invoice, the tax is counted by lines, and the result is the sum of lines.

To avoid discrepancies between you and the buyer, agree on what to calculate the price: from the amount with or without tax.

"Including" and "from above" in the documents

  • “Including VAT” Prices in the lines already include tax, the document shows how much it is inside.
  • "VAT on top" Prices in lines without tax, it is added to the result.

In the contract, it is necessary to write directly whether the price includes tax. If this is not stated, the general rule is that the price tax includes, and the seller cannot claim it above the price.
